ESIAS: Four Environment and Social Impact Assessments have been completed to date, for

  • Mining, Karo's processing plant and the Tailings Storage Factility (TSF)
  • Karo's power supply
  • Karo's water supply
  • The construction of a 5 000 megalitre dam on the Chirundazi river.

All ESIAs have been developed to meet the requirements set out in the Zimbabwean Environmental Management Act and IFC standards. To date, four certificates have been issued, for the mine and plant, for the project's power and water supply and, most recently, for the construction of a 5 million m3 dam on the Chirundazi river. The Non-Technical Summaries for the Mine and Plant ESIA and Chirundazi dam are available here.

Equator Principles: In line with the latest iteration of the Equator Principles, Karo has also commissioned a climate transition risk analysis and a human rights assessment.

Environmental and Social Management System: Together, these different studies provide the basis of our risk management strategy with regards to community and environmental impacts. Our comprehensive management system is designed to ensure all impacts are mitigated and the effectiveness of these mitigation measures is monitored and tested.
